General Information on Housing

Housing can be a problem in Boston. Boston was rated as the fifth most expensive city in the US by Fortune magazine in 1997. Rents as well as cost of living can be very high, and international visitors as well as US citizens will find housing in the city very expensive. Finding an apartment can be quite a task, especially during the beginning of the fall semester when the population of the city nearly doubles. Summer sublets are much easier to find when most students have vacated their apartments, or temporarily moved to other cities. Summer can be a great time to do an internship.

Lease agreements are typically for a period of one year. Few places offer less than that. If you feel that you may want to later change your apartment, try to get a lease that allows you to provide a 1 or 2 month notice to terminate the agreement.

Brookline and Malden have been popular locations amongst the DSG fellows who are accompanied with their families. Single visitors have used studios or shared apartments in the Longwood Galleria Apartments, the Vanderbilt Hall, or in other places such as Cambridge, Somerville, or Brighton.

Going through a realtor to obtain an apartment will be simpler, but more expensive, since the realtor's fee may vary from 15 days rent to 1 month's rent. One can either contact Apartment Housing management offices, or take a look at the Boston Globe listings. One can also find free "Apartment Guides" and "Roommate matching services" booklets in yellow kiosks all over the city.
